Today I’m sharing with you my top five ingredients for oily skin. Oily skin is something I know many of you guys deal with, and it tends to be more obvious in the summer months, especially if you live in a humid climate.

Why Do You Have Oily Skin?

Irregular oil production is largely governed by hormonal imbalances in your body. For example, in women, the time of Ovulation progesterone levels are higher, and that makes you oilier or shinier.

You can have oilier skin as a result of your genetics. Some people just have larger oil glands, more prominent pores, and thus, oilier skin.

Ingredients For Oily Skin

The ingredients that I’m sharing with you can help reduce that burden of oiliness on your skin and help kind of degrease you😛

These are the top 7 ingredients for oily skin that are also recommended by many dermatologists around the world.

Ingredient#1: Clay

Clay is a very absorbent ingredient found in masks that can help reduce the appearance of oiliness by absorbing up oil from the surface of the skin and from within pores. This can reduce breakouts and improve the effectiveness of other skincare products.

There are many types of clays you can use for oily skin. The most common ones are fuller’s earth (multani mitti), kaolin clay and bentonite clay. Bentonite clay is a very effective clay that sucks up oil from your skin and also helps to shrink acne. However, some clay masks can be drying, which is why it’s important to use a moisturizer after any type of clay mask.

Ingredient#2: Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Niacinamide is not irritating, has very low risk, and is unproblematic. This is a perfect ingredient for those who have just got into skincare and not know much about the fancy stuff in this world. This is an all in one product for me that targets almost all the generic skincare problems.

Niacinamide is a B vitamin that has so many benefits for our skin. It reduces inflammation, evens out skin tone, improves the moisture barrier, and efficiently decreases oil production.

It can also reduce oxidative stress, which can contribute to acne, blackheads and other skin issues. Studies have shown that using a moisturizer with niacinamide can help reduce acne severity and the output of oil onto the skin.

Ingredient#3: Green Tea

With green tea you can drink your way to clear and healthy skin. It is k known to be rich in anti oxidants but one other thing that green tea does is reduce oil production in the skin.

Green tea, specifically the polyphenols in green tea, is also anti-inflammatory and can reduce oxidative stress. It has been shown to reduce oiliness and pore size in some research studies. Likely by inhibiting some of the hormonal signaling pathways involved in oil production.

In some studies, a 2-4% green tea emulsion used for eight weeks has been shown to reduce excess oil production.

Aside from this green tea has plenty more benefits that you can read here: Can Green Tea Improve Your Skin Health?

Ingredient#4: Chemical Exfoliants

Chemical exfoliation is really important because it allows it to penetrate down into the pore where that excess oil is being produced and cleanses it out. It can help break apart that oil and help reduce the amount of oil production overall.

You can use AHAs, BHAs or PHAs. The most commonly used BHA is salicylic acid and a very well known AHA is glycolic acid.

1- Salicylic Acid:

Salicylic acid also has some strong exfoliating properties. It removes dead skin cells that can clog pores and contribute to breakouts. Salicylic acid is found in a lot of acne treatments, including spot treatments, toners, and cleansers.

But it’s important to note that salicylic acid can be drying, so it’s important to use it in moderation and to make sure to moisturize afterwards. Use this or any BHA once a week.

2- Glycolic Acid:

This is the most common AHA that is used in skincare. It is highly effective and potent. Glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane. It has the smallest molecular size compared to other AHAs which is why it penetrates deeper into the skin and is more effective.

Glycolic acid is gentler on our skin. even if you have sensitive skin you can use this. Start out with twice a week and then eventually use it at every night. The toner for is best if you are stating out with glycolic acid.

Ingredient#5: Retinol (Vitamin A)

Like niacinamide, retinols are all rounders. The slight exfoliation property of retinol makes it a great ingredient for people with oily skin type. It can eventually decrease excess oil production in your skin.

The only problem is, that it can cause irritation. So start out with 0.2% retinol or even lesser. Then eventually build up your tolerance to it. 1% retinol is the goal. Retinol takes around 3 months to show full results.

Ingredient#6: Aloevera

Aloe vera is a great ingredient for oily skin. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can heal minor cuts and bruises as well as wounds.

It also fights any active infections on your skin. This makes it great for healing acne and blemishes without drying out our skin.

Aloe vera acts as a mild astringent. This means that it goes into your pores, it unbinds all the dirt and sebum from your pores and removes them from your skin giving a mild exfoliation effect.

Daily use of aloevera gel can decrease oil production in your skin and give your skin a nice glow without all the greasiness. There is so much more goodness to aloevera which makes it a must have in your skincare.

Ingredient#7: Vitamin C

Vitamin C is known as a skin brightening ingredient. But did you know that it can also help if you have excess oily production. Vitamin C is your best friend if you have oily and acne prone skin. It will not only reduce oily and greasy skin, but will fight acne too due to its anti inflammatory properties.
