Top 5 Best Moisturizers For Oily Skin

Published by Derm Rituals on

Oily skin… Such a common skin type these days. Everyone who has oily skin would think that they do not need moisturizers as their skin is already producing a lot of oil to moisturize the skin right?

Wrong…!!

Oily skin is actually dehydrated skin. More oil is produced by the skin to cover the skin’s need for hydration. This can be caused by multiple factors like using products that rip off the natural oils of the skin, bad diet or hormonal changes etc.

Our skin needs to be hydrated like any other living thing. Moisturizers are a way to provide hydration to the skin. Moisturizing is the most important step of our skincare. And it is the most overlooked step as well, especially when we have oily skin. We often forget the importance of applying moisturizer to our skin.

Moisturizing will keep the skin barrier healthy and strong and can actually help to reduce the problem of oily skin.

But using the wrong moisturizers can make things worse.

Types of Moisturizers:

We need to stay away from moisturizers that can cause clogged pores, which then can lead to several skin problems like acne, blackheads, whiteheads, or other breakouts.

There are two different types of moisturizers:

-Comedogenic

-Non-Comedogenic

Comedogenic Moisturizers: (Better to Avoid)

Comedogenic is something that will cause clogged pores. “Comedo” is the term used to describe a blocked pore. A comedogenic moisturizer is one that contains ingredients that have the tendency to sink deep into our pores and block them. Thus, causing skin problems like acne, whiteheads and blackheads.

Do not use heavy, oil based moisturizers as they are mostly comedogenic. Oils like coconut oil, olive oil and other vegetable oils that are commonly used on skin can also be comedogenic.

Non-Comedogenic Moisturizers: (Safe to use)

Non-comedogenic” refers to a product that is formulated to help reduce potential blockage of visible pores. Products that state that they are designed with a non-comedogenic formula can help beautify your skin with a reduced chance of blocking your pores.

Always opt for non-comedogenic moisturizers especially if you have oily or acne prone skin.

I am sharing links with you for some of my personal favorite moisturizers that are non-comedogenic. These moisturizers are great for combination skin (oily on the T-Zone) and I’ve been loving them. They are so light weight and non-greasy and keep the skin soft and plump. Best for all skin types especially in summers. My top 5 favorite moisturizers for oily skin are:

  1. Neutrogena Hydroboost
  2. The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisturizer
  3. Clinique Moisture Surge
  4. Cetaphil PRO Oil Absorbing Moisturizer
  5. BENTON Aloe Propolis Soothing Gel

1. Neutrogena Hydroboost:

This is my number one pick. Neutrogena Hydroboost instantly quenches dehydrated skin for a healthy-looking glow day after day. This award-winning formula with Hyaluronic Acid absorbs quickly like a gel but has the lasting, intense moisturizing power of a cream. Clinically proven to help strengthen skin’s moisture barrier. It looks like a heavier gel but it is very lightweight.

It is best to be used before makeup as it is breathable and will not give that suffocated feel to the skin and keep the moisture locked into the skin all day.

2. The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisturizer:

This is one of the best daily use moisturizers that I have used and still do to this day. It has a fast-absorbing formula. It’s oil-free and perfect for combination to oily skin. I love to put it on my face in the morning as it feels super light and refreshing on the skin.

The best part is that it has Vitamin E in it which is an excellent ingredient for all skin types. Vitamin E helps with keeping the skin healthy and glowing. This moisturizer can be used as an overnight mask as well.

3. Clinique Moisture Surge:

Clinique Moisture Surge has a beautifully smooth formula that instantly hydrates the skin with a pea sized amount. It’s responsible for giving skin a plump, youthful look. This is great for oily skin as well as aging skin.

The only part I do not like about it is that it is a little overpriced. But you only need a small pea sized amount so a little goes a long way.

4. Cetaphil PRO Oil Absorbing Moisturizer:

This moisturizer is very lightweight even though it has SPF in it. IT controls oil and shine on the skin, making it especially great for acne-prone and oily/combination skin. Its formula is fragrance free so it is also a great product for people with sensitive skin.

It works as a 2 in 1 product because it has sunscreen in it, providing your skin the hydration it needs with the protection of sunscreen. It is also a good to be used before applying makeup.

5. BENTON Aloe Propolis Soothing Gel:

This one is the lightest moisturizer and its texture is most watery, so it is best for people with oily skin. It is also fragrance-free and cruelty-free. It has a dewy finish on the skin but it is non-greasy. This moisturizer does not have silicones in and has organic ingredients too.

The base ingredient is aloe vera leaf water so it has anti-inflammatory properties too. It also has propolis which is common in Korean skincare products. Propolis has anti-fungal, anti-oxidant, and anti-bacterial properties. It soothes the skin along with providing moisture and glow to the skin. In my opinion, it will also help with acne, blackheads, and blemishes. This moisturizer is watery so it can give a sticky feeling if you apply too much.

To Conclude:

  • Oily skin is dehydrated skin so hydrating your skin can help balance the oil production.
  • Do not use comedogenic moisturizers on oily skin.
  • Watery and gel-based moisturizers are best for oily skin.
  • Add one of these moisturizers to your derm ritual.

So above are my top favorites for oily skin. I hope they get to be your favorites too.
